Girls Play Footy is a volunteer-operated news service focused solely on female Australian rules football.
Founded in 2013 by Matt Marsden and Katie Lambeski, Girls Play Footy began as a small Facebook page sharing scores from top women’s competitions around Australia. In 2014, Girls Play Footy expanded to a website and has since covered all the major events in the women’s game, particularly the journey to establishing the AFL Women’s national competition.
Girls Play Footy further expanded in 2015 by introducing live radio coverage, curated by Peter Holden, of matches in Victoria’s premier women’s football competition. In doing so, Girls Play Footy became the first source to provide live radio coverage of a women’s football competition for a full season, backing up that feat in 2016 for the introduction of the VFL Women’s league.
