10 best AFLW matches of 2017: Number 6

As Boxing Day rolls around and the end of the year draws closer, we revisit number six in our countdown of 2017’s 10 best AFLW games: the inaugural AFLW Grand Final.

Though very few would’ve tipped either Adelaide or Brisbane to make the Grand Final, both teams were incredible all season and put on a captivating and exciting spectacle, which should’ve come as no surprise after the sensational match between the two clubs in the regular season.

The Grand Final certainly did not disappoint, with the premiership being decided a solitary goal.

The tone of the Grand Final was set in the very early going when Kellie Gibson kicked the game’s opening goal within the first 15 seconds, setting off the away fans that had travelled to Metricon Stadium.

Though Adelaide maintained their early lead all game, the efforts of Jessica Wuetschner and Tayla Harris kept Brisbane close, and Harris’ goal with eight minutes left in the final term made the margin just five points.

The final eight minutes were thrilling, especially as Brisbane went forward with the clock expiring.

In one last ditch effort, the ball was sent inside forward 50 and Sabrina Frederick-Traub pleasded her case for a free kick that would’ve given her the chance to tie the game after the siren.

It was not to be, however, as Adelaide held on to beat the team that had overcome them in the regular season, claiming the inaugural AFLW premiership in the process.

Unsurprisingly, Erin Phillips was incredible on the day, kicking two goals with her 28 disposals to be named the best player on the ground.
