10 best AFLW matches of 2017: Number 1

We have reached the final day of 2017, thus marking the final entry in our countdown of the 10 best AFLW matches of 2017.

It has been fun to look back on the historic inaugural season, especially with it being so long ago. It’s our hope that you have also enjoyed this trip down memory lane, and we can’t wait for what 2018 has to offer!

But there’s still the matter of sharing which match we think was 2017’s best, and it is the round five clash between Adelaide and Brisbane.

No doubt many fans will remember what a competitive, thrilling encounter the Crows and Lions’ Grand Final meeting was, but less remember the showing they put on just three weeks prior.

The Grand Final was great, but this was sensational. The lead changed multiple times as tempers flared between both sides, and the passion and skill that was on display made this game our choice for the best AFLW match of 2017.

Adelaide and Brisbane each entered the match with 4-0 records, and nothing could split the two sides at the quarter time break as they went in at a goal apiece.

Though Adelaide had a slender eight-point lead at the half, it would be Brisbane taking the lead not even five minutes into the third term through quickfire goals from Kate McCarthy – who added another highlight goal to her reel – and Kate Lutkins.

The teams went back and forth for the remainder of the quarter, and a clutch goal from Emma Zielke reduced Adelaide’s lead to just two points heading into the final break.

McCarthy would again be the one to do the damage for the Lions, kicking an early goal in the fourth quarter that would end up being the last of the match, but the game was far from decided.

The Crows continued to press, leading to an opportunity for Erin Phillips to snap an opportunity that only narrowly missed the middle of the big sticks.

Sarah Perkins executed a perfect tackle to win her side a free kick with less than 10 seconds to go, but her kick forward was all in vain as the siren sounded before the ball could land.

It was a terrific display of football from two teams battling it out to remain undefeated and become premiership favourites.

After this contest, in which the lead changed hands four times and the margin was never larger than eight points either way, it seemed fitting that the two would again meet in the Grand Final.
