The 2017 AFLW Draft picture will begin to become clearer as the NAB AFLW Draft Combine gets underway today.
The Combine, held at Etihad Stadium on October 3-4, will be a showcase of the country’s best draftable talent, who will all be hoping to lock in spots on an AFLW list for 2018.
47 players have been invited to the event ahead of the Wednesday, October 18 AFLW Draft. Players were invited by both prospective AFLW clubs and state bodies.
The Combine is not restricted to just eligible 18-year-olds, with highly-rated Diamond Creek small forward Sophie Abbatangelo, who we project is a second-round selection, will look to impress at the age of 27.
Renee Cowan, a premiership-winning defender for Yeronga South Brisbane in the QWAFL, will also attempt to get a look in despite turning 28 just prior to the draft.
For those outside of Victoria, the Combine will be all about confirming selections, with most clubs already having a relatively clear idea of who they will pick.
For Victorian clubs, however, the event will be of vital importance.
The Western Bulldogs will get a good look at the top two draft prospects: forward Chloe Molloy and midfielder Isabel Huntington.
Molloy is expected to be the first overall pick, but a collarbone injury sustained in the VFL Women’s Grand Final will keep her from being a full participant at the event.
For Huntington, it will be her first chance to show what she’s got since 2016, when she fell victim to an ACL injury that has sidelined her all season.
Whoever is not selected with pick one will fall to Collingwood at pick three overall, as Fremantle has the second overall selection.
Damaging half-back Darcy Guttridge and evasive midfielder Monique Conti are predicted to be the next Victorian selections, with the Western Bulldogs back in action with the third pick in the Vic draft (fourth overall) and Melbourne possessing the fourth (sixth overall).
Guttridge was named the AFLW Under-18 All-Australian captain on the half-back flank.
Conti, a champion youth basketballer, has shown rapid development and has an extremely high ceiling.
We want to wish the best of luck to all of those participating in the Combine!
Girls Play Footy’s AFLW Phantom Draft, which predicts the first two rounds in the AFLW Draft, will be released on Wednesday morning.
