Tiah Haynes claims number one in second women’s draft

With the second AFL women’s draft behind us, the 50 girls to run out on Etihad Stadium on Sunday June 29 have been finalised after the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne Demons made 24 selections between them.

With WA dominating the draft, it only seemed fitting that a WA girl would claim the title of number one draft pick as the Bulldogs selected Tiah Haynes from Coastal Titans.

2014 women’s draft number one pick Tiah Haynes.

A relative of AFL legend Polly Farmer, Haynes is a multi-talented player with plenty of ability and is certainly deserving of the first selection. As a midfielder that seems to lurk around the forward 50, Tiah is no stranger to kicking a goal or two and will hope to do so come June 29.

31-year-old VWFL and Eastern Devils veteran Meg Hutchins was selected with the Demons’ first pick. As a hard-running defender, Hutchins is sure to bring the same determination she brings each week to Etihad Stadium.

The Bulldogs’ double selection as part of the draft equalisation selection was used to secure the Darebin Falcons’ Darcy Vescio and East Fremantle’s Melissa Caulfield with picks three and four respectively.

Although she only has 20 VWFL games under her belt, Vescio is a talented medium-sized forward with the ability to kick a bag in the blink of an eye. Caulfield is returning from an ACL injury but has justified her selected by playing some fantastic footy.

One of the draftees with an intriguing story was newly drafted Demon Emma Zielke, selected with pick seven. Having played as a junior in Queensland, Zielke found herself with nowhere to play as a passionate female footballer. She decided to start her own club, Coorparoo, and has continued to go from strength to strength.

Western Australia took the lion’s share of quality selections this year with nine of the 24 females selected coming from the west. Victoria also had nine draftees, though most came later in the draft. Coastal Titans produced five players, the most of any club.
