The VWFL officially kicked off its season on ANZAC Day by showcasing some of the state’s best players of all ages in three big games.
The day saw players, fans, coaches and officials from all over Victoria gather and watch some exciting and highly-competitive Victorian footy.
On top of the fourth annual ANZAC Day clash between the VWFL All Stars and the Australian Defence Force All Stars, some of the best Victoria has to offer were on display in the Victorian state draft game while the Vic Metro and Vic Country Youth Girls started proceedings.
Ahead of the Youth Girls National Championships in a week, where these two teams will meet again, Vic Metro ran out comfortable 70-point winners over Vic Country. Although it was a lopsided scoreline, the Vic Country girls will take a lot of information about their opposition into next week.
Despite holding a 25-point lead at the final break, the Pink team could only watch as the White team came roaring back to claim a draw in the women’s draft game. In a match that was for girls aspiring to be drafted by the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne Demons, a draw seemed fitting as the girls played out an intense contest.
In the main event, it was the VWFL All Stars that got off to a flying start to lead by 22 points at the first break but the lead was all but eroded by the ADF All Stars, cutting the margin to just three points going into half time.
The ADF kept it close with the VWFL only holding a nine-point lead going into the final change and just as though they flicked a switch, the ADF girls kicked four of the last five goals to steal the victory by seven points.
The head-to-head record now stretches to 3-1 in favour of the ADF All Stars after their terrific comeback from 22-0 at the first change.
The five VWFL seasons officially begin next weekend with plenty of games to be observed around the state.
